Dot Code

LabeljoyNew version

Dot Code is made of separate dots rather than squares, so it can be printed by printers that can't print solid areas - the fast inkjets that mark products on a production line, cigarette packs among them.

LJX-0042 2026-10.

What it holds
CharactersLetters, digits and symbols, and the accented letters of Western European languages - é, ü, ñ and the like. The euro sign, other alphabets and emoji don't fit: use a QR Code for those.
LengthUp to 1,968 digits or 984 letters.
Error correctionBuilt in: there's nothing to choose.
Readable textNone.
Settings
ColumnsHow wide the code is, in dots: Automatic columns, or from 5 to 50. The number of rows follows from the value. A fixed number keeps every label the same width.
EncodingStandard or GS1: see GS1 and HIBC data.

Characters you can't type. With Encoding set to Standard, a tilde followed by three digits is the character with that code - ~013 is a carriage return - and ~~ is a tilde.

The rest of the settings - quiet zone, color - are in the Barcode section.

What goes wrong
Specified symbol size is too large. The value needs more rows than a Dot Code that many Columns wide can have: choose more columns, or Automatic columns. With Automatic columns, the value is too long for any Dot Code.
Only Latin-1 characters, the letters of Western European languages, fit in this barcode. The value has a character Dot Code can't hold - a euro sign, another alphabet, an emoji.
